Our History
Formed in 1952, the Sanbornton Historical Society (SHS) is dedicated to cataloging, preserving, and promoting the history of Sanbornton, New Hampshire. Members participate in a number of activities and events during the year, including presentations on topics of historical interest for both Sanbornton and the state of New Hampshire.
In 1964, SHS was instrumental in having the Historic District of Sanbornton established, and subsequently placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
In 1965, the SHS acquired the old Lane Tavern building in historic Sanbornton Square.
The exact date of its construction is unknown, but records related to its operation date before 1808. Charles Lane bought the tavern in 1825, and the Lane name has remained part of its heritage.
The building now serves as the headquarters of the Sanbornton Historical Society, as well being available for rent for special events.

Vision & Purpose
“There may have been a time when preservation was about saving an old building here or there, but those days are gone. Preservation is in the business of saving communities and the values they embody.”
